If you fail to catalyze the enamel paints with a hardener, you may not be able to wet sand right way. They should not be compounded until the paint has had a chance to cure. This could take several days. So pretty much you have to read the back of the can....some you can right away some you have to wait a day or 2. Good luck.

Dang good write-up! (fingers sore?)
I'd like to add a couple items that non-professionals should know; 1. Other than the paint it's self, almost all body working materials are porous! I'm talking about most brands of Bondo and also most primers. If a primer doesn't state clearly that it's a "sealer", then it's porous! (I always try to not mix up the terms "primer" and "sealer") They can soak up any oil from your hands, which can cause the paint to not stick or fish-eye. So, wash your hands alot. Don't let your friends touch your car. If you carry a part (hood), don't let it rest against your body (BTDT). They can pass water through them and cause rust to form where it can't be seen. This is a problem for somebody that has to use their car on a daily basis and as a result it sits outside. 2. All body working materials (and this includes paint) shrink over time! (unless you are doing lead work, which I doubt any Honda has ever seen) Now some people say that it doesn't matter as long as the applied material is thin, but it is a reality!! If you do a perfect bondo job in a days time and paint it, after a week you will notice that the area shows imperfections that were not there before. I always like to let material cure for at least a week before trying to get it perfectly straight. This is also true with "high build" fillers. 3. Different types of materials have a different hardness. When you are sanding the car and some areas have primer exposed and others have paint, you will never be able to sand it smooth!! Why? It's due to the fact that as you sand, the softer material gets removed faster. You should alway have the whole area you are working primered. If while sanding you get down to a different material (like the original paint), you should spray more primer over it and start again. 4. Use a shop light that shines down the length of your car to look for ripples. You should also turn off all the other lights. By doing this, waves show up real fast as shadows. If the light is shining directly at the panel, you will see nothing. This might not seem to make sense at first, but try it!!! 5. When mixing paint, use a quality cup! (no athletic jokes please) It's the kiss of death if you use any cup that has a wax coating!!! When I'm feeling cheap, I use clean Starbuck's coffee cups. That's why I always get my coffee "double cuped". If you use a styrofoam cup, you will get what you deserve. Wes Vann |

Awesome article, lots of info. I'm planning on getting my car painted soon so this is great stuff.
One thing I should point out, you wrote: TYPES OF SPRAY COATS The easiest way to control thickness is by changing how fast you move the gun sideways. If you move the gun slower, a heavier, thicker coat will be applied. If you move more slowly, film thickness is decreased. Did you mean faster? Thanks! Janos
