Alright guys and gals, I went out on a limb.. Took a BIG risk.. and OMG did it ever pay off!!
I saw a thread on Team-Integra where a guy was dying his carpet black, the usual way w/dye/water in a tub.
To complete his tan to black interior, he used Duplicolor Vinyl and Fabric dye (comes in a spray can) to do his seats.
They came out pretty good. I had a spare set of seats that were left over from when I installed black leathers, in my GSR.
I figured I"d try it out and see how it looked.
OMG.. I used 1 can of paint, complete can and the seat looked factory. The following day (today) I bought several more cans ( I think 7 total) and my buddy (Eli) and I pulled my carpet out (tan) and my back seat and went to work.
3 hours later... I have a freakin SEXY BLACK INTERIOR!
Here's the pics from beginning to the end....
What I was starting out with... Nasty tan carpet (pulled out of a junk car)
Here is a comparision of the stock seat and a seat dyed.
Can't tell it came out of a can, can you?
The seats were already out, but we had to get the current seats/carpet out.. so the real work begins...
Nasty.. Again, I did none of those stains, it was on the carpet when I got it. You shoudl have seen the Gray carpet that came OUT of it... Wow.. This looks like new compared to that
Ran into a problem here.. We didnt have the right wrench/socket to fir this. SO, a trip up town to get some tools was needed.
Here's Eli workin on it..
And here's Eli being.. well.. Eli.
Here's the back seat BEFORE:
Here's the carpet out. Gets a thumb up from both of us!
Here's a pic of the rear seat section, new hotness and the old n' busted:
I say BOOO to nasty tan carpet.
And it begins...
I say YEAH! To half uber sexy black carpet
Almost done...
A nice action shot
Taa Freakin Daaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Que angels singing in harmony decending from heaven)
So, after the carpet was done, I went back to working on the rear seat. I ALMOST get done and I run out of dye.. SOOOOOOOO Close.. You can see how close I was. Had to get another can
Here is the last pic of the rear seat..
And we ran out of daylight. We did manage, however, to re-assemle the interior, seats and all, save for the wiring of my sub and fan switch. So I don't have a compete interior shot YET... I will tomorrow
Before:
After!!
Any discoloration the seats may look like they have is just the way the light is reflecting off of them. They are very evenly coated. Can't tell it came from a man with a can!
Now, the questions I'm sure you have..
#1 How hard is this?-- I've painted w/spray cans for years, so I'm very familiar w/how to use it (there is a technique) so its nice and even. But really, it's not hard. Just smooth even coats.
#2: How much did this cost?-- I used 7 cans, from Discount Auto and Walmart. Totaled around $30.00 to $35.00 max.
#3: Does the dye come off?-- Well, after it's dried, it does'nt. When I had to go back to town to get another an of paint, I wore a white shirt (as seen in the pic) and SAT on a white shirt just to see if they would get black on them.... NOTHING! No smears, no nothing.
#4: Would'nt the material be stiff and whatnot?-- Yes, it is. But, after you run your hand over it a few times, it softens up (some guys take pills so that doesn't happen, ha ha) . Feels like it was never sprayed.
#5: Doesn't your car smell now?-- Oh heck yes. It's rough. I'm expecting to have a smell for several days. I plan on vacuming it tomorrow and Febreezing it, so I"ll keep ya posted on how the smell is.
#6: Are you happy you did it?-- Eli and I agree that it looks better than we expected. It's such a HUGE difference from what I had and it really does look infinitely better.
And, I suppose that does it for now guys. I"ll post pics tomorrow after I vacume it out and I'm in the sun.
Hope this helps somebody out one day.. I know I'm sure happy I checked out that thread on T-I!

To all that think that is a great idea and that it looks nice at first .. It might look nice at frist but give it a little awhile and you will see .. Kid that owned my car before did it and wish he didnt.. the carpet was nice and black now its tan and black .. the carpet in my car is hard ... the paint chips off of the plastic easy ... i dont think its a good idea .. .. if your going to do it do it right and go buy the right color that you want .. like i am doing now .. but than again each to his own ..

Very interesting. Looks like it all came out really good. I'd like to see how things look reassembled in the car before I'll make final judgement. I'm thinking that this would be a good way to sell my tan seats as either tan or black.

Yes, it will chip off the plastic but I dont think it will chip off the carpet, since it is made for it. Nice job thought on the interior painting. I will do it tomorrow to my carpet and seats

it'll eventually fade especially in th areas that see alot of contact , i did my blue floor mats with that stuff . it looks good , but it won't last . its better than stained up tan though.
