Default SOHC done right. My d16z6 build.

Ok after almost forgetting about the pile of parts sitting in my computer room under plastic I figured I would start a build post to get me motivated again.
This build has taken way too long because:

1) I have a z6 with a1 pistons in my car now that runs very good IMO and I wanted to take it as far as I could without any headwork, cam, and valve train.
2) I just bought a garage I have been working on and funds have been low.
3) I Have 2 other cars

Now down to business:

Head: D16Z6 milled .020” Ported & flow benched (It was 2 years ago I lost the numbers)
Crower springs and titanium retainers # 84166
Crower stage 3 cam # 63443z
3 angle performance valve job throat was punched .020”
0.5mm oversized valves, forged stainless sae ev8 (uns 563008) heat treated, black nitrated, swirl polished.
12:1 CPR with D16y8 2 layer HG

Block: D16A6 bored and honed milled .020"
Arias pistons # 350235, bore 2.955, comp height 29.3/-0.05 dome, weight 238g
Eagle H beam rods.
ARP head studs
ACL race bearings
New OEM d16z6 oil pump, timing belt, gaskets

Crank: D16Z6 soon to be balanced

Tranny: D16A6 totally rebuilt with OBX LSD
ZC 3rd, 4th.si 5th
ACT extreme pressure plate and street disk (I didnt want harsh enguagement for autox)
XACT 8.4lb prolite steel Fly wheel

Management: OBD1 conversion chipped P28 running chrome with ITB tools

DIY ITB’s CBR 954RR’s
http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1796381

I hope to have the motor in this year,

Here are some pics for your enjoyment:

Pistons, rods

Block:

Exhaust side port work.

Head from intake side and port work:

Chamber:

ITB's and header from old setup:

Questions comments welcome.

Im shooting for 165-170whp and I try not to think about the price.
Less than a gsr swap and alot less weight up front

Sigh. Haters always chime in on D builds.

I like the fact that you punched out the throat to accomodate the bigger valves. Not something the average person does.

Trust me, there are haters on B16/b18 builds too.

Props on the build and doing what you want

woot!! awesome.. hmmm... you might make more power than me. In fact.. i might have to run forged pistons/rods myself...

on a side note, thanks a lot for posting the pics of the crower retainers. I just got my crower valvetrain with my crower stage 3 and the bag with the retainers said b16 with 87096, but fit the springs fine.. so i guess crower retainers are the same for b and d's

the sohc empire is strong in you.

Beyond the fact that it has torque unlike some other motors, there is a sense of pride making 44% more power than stock without changing the displacement.

I won't touch the torque comment, but I can appreciate where you're coming from. Doing more with less is always great (I love telling people my 96 cubic inch motor makes over 400whp).

I know that 150whp civics can sure be fun and the fact that he attained the power from hard work and research rather then just buying a b-series makes it all the more fun for the OP. I just question the point of this exercise; the only really good reason I can see is to stay within class rules for some sort of autocross/road racing.

clean build, high attention to detail, nice work

the only good reason i can see for this build, is that he wanted to build a d-series, AND THAT IS MORE THAN ENOUGH..... PROPS TO U FOR NOT BEING A CONFORMIST AND BUILDING WHAT U WANT

Horsepower is horsepower. More power to him for getting it how he wants.
