Default ls/vtec build knock sensor needed or not?

getting ready to do a ls/vtec build soon. i've noticed that all the infomation i have read, is that the knock sensor is needed. Why is it need? If it's really only need by the ecu, can't you disable it in crome... So your not throwing a cell light?
