painting your calipers red would look awesome with the black wheels

I got my calipers painted red and am very tempted to paint my stock si wheels black now that i've seen what it can look like, thanks for the DIY

Yeah center caps are on now. I orginally had a different idea for them but that fell through so i just painted them all black

Just wondering why you (or the other DIY's) chose 80 Grit sand paper, 80 is a pretty coarse grit. Are there any sand scratches visible after you painted the rims?

80 grit is pretty coarse and not needed really. I mean its up to the person doing it and I suspect that choosing the 80 grit is to cut through the factory coat quickly. Enough coats of paint such as Michael Bolton used would cover up any deep cuts into the wheels. Using light pressure and 4+ coats like he did is fine ans obvisouly he did a good job.

Ive used in the past, 100 grit/ scuff pads before tear down and then ~500 wet before I painted. I used 4 coats of primer, 1 of base coat and 2 of clear. I think the primer is the most important part. To each his own.. I think these wheels look great.

to the OP, what size/offset are the wheels (16x7 +44 Im guessing) and what size are the tires (205/55 ?)???

I wasn't knocking him for using 80 grit, was just wondering. I used to do body work and know that 80 grit scratches are hard to bury, even when using filler primer. I always went 80 (36 before 80 if large area with lots of mud) > 150 > 220 wet > 320 wet, to ensure there would be no sand scratches visible. A lot of time your primer can shrink right into the sand scratches after fully curing and become visible.

Nice write up....I'm painting mine the end of the month....but I wasn't going to strip them totally...just get rid of the first layer

I dunno why I used 80 grit really. I have no expirence in body work let alone painting so we kind of just winged it. The wheels are by no means perfect but they look decent. Also these are only my winter wheels so I wasn't really looking to go baller status on them. I see what you are saying about sanding up through the grades increasing grit as I go along. Sometime during the summer I plan on stripping them down again and repainting them. I will probabley strip them the same way but paint them differently. I'll use wet sanding using higher grits after each coat and such. These were pretty much just a test. We did all 4 wheels in 1 afternoon on a freakishly warm January day. In the summer when the weather is nicer I will have more time to play around with them and may even do them different for next winter but I will keep you posted.

I was just wondering, all in all I like the way they look. If I ever get some money together, I may try this DIY. I work in a body shop so I have access paint/full downdraft booth/all kinds of stuff. I'll break my SATA out and paint em in the booth lol. Whenever that may be...God only knows.

Paint still looks good. I actually just took them off the car but didnt really fully inspect them. The only place I noticed any chipping or anything was in the holes for the lug nuts. I guess you just have give a little extra attention in that area. But this summer I'm goging to strip them down and re-do them. T/A style. Just kidding, but serioulsly I'm going to re-do them.

I'd feel a little funny about the 80 grit. seems too rough. You could also get away with just using a scuff pad (wet), or combine the scuff pad with the sanding gel. Don't need to take off all the paint just to make it dull so it grabs the paint without making big scratch marks from the sand paper.

that is a great DIY, but I still may go across the street to a body shop. They do kick ass work and the guy will do it for a decent price if you pay him cash(wink, wink)

You can. But you have to wedge some index cards in the edge of the rim so they cover the tires otherwise you will get over spray on the tires and it will look like crap. Also by insterting the index cards it will harder to paint that outside lip. So lets say your paiting the Si stock wheels for example. You leave the tires on and paint them black. You MIGHT still see the alloy/gray color along the bead of the tire.
In conclusion I have shown that if you leave the tires on it might yield a poor result.
