It also has a lot to do with them being in a small room, with no filter on the turbo and it pointing straight up in the air. If it was on the street it wouldnt be nearly as loud. If you want the sound of the turbo to be heard then just leave an open DP, youll sound like a damn jet when you floor it...

that's what i said when i saw the vid, but the turbo can be heard whining till redline. Granted its not as loud when your sitting behind the turbo, but it spools unnaturaly loud and can be heard even from the cabin.

anyone care to explain antisurge? What the hell is this

BOV is whats used to prevent compressor surge, it really looks like those holes on that compressor are there just to change the sound.

The holes in the compressor housing allow air inside the compressor inlet to bypass the wheels to prevent compressor surge when the turbo is moving at high speeds, different from how a BOV stops the compressor from stalling.

diesels have the sound pretty much from factory, but when you chip them and open up their exhaust they really scream.
i've heard a few high boost hondas make that sound as well as some low boost hondas with tiny turbos. this is what leads me to believe that the anti-surge housing doesn't have much to do with that sound.

this is just an observation though so i could be way off

Sorry guys you're off base here, the anti surge housing is absolutely responsible for how loud this turbo is. Go watch a video of a T51R car driving and listen to how loud that is. My buddies RX7 with a T51R at 12 pounds of boost sounds louder than my SC61 non ported shroud does at 25 psi. Cummins Diesels using Holset HX35's come with a silencer ring from the factory, and all it's doing is eliminating the anti-surge ring on the compressor housing, or making it much smaller. If your explanation was true, a GT30R being pushed to only 420 WHP and 13 pounds of boost would not be this loud.

Would it then be proper to assume that one could bolt an anti-surge compressor housing to a turbo such as an SC-61? Or would it be more feasible to just purchase a turbo that comes with that housing?

It could just be from maxing the turbo out. Once the outter fins go supersonic, everythign beyond that speed is mostly wasted energy. Once anything goes supersonic, its anyone's guess at how pressure waves and such will produce (odd) sounds from all the harmonics and whatnot.

For daily drivers, I much prefer just the 'woosh' from the snail sucking in mass quantities of air. Especially if your car is a sleeper. Supras & FD's are neither.

You can order the SC61 from Precision with an anti-surge compressor housing, just call them up.

I don't think there is anything wrong with using a turbo that makes a better noise. After all we build our cars to drive and enjoy them, if you have a choice pick which one makes you happy.

My Turbonetics 57 trim had a nice sound to it on open downpipe but my Sc61 just sounded like it was all motor even under boost. I didn't care much for the sound at all.

I agree. People pick out wheels based on what looks better, and exhausts based on what sounds/looks better, so why not lean towards a BOV or Turbo that sounds better to make your car more enjoyable to drive.
