Default Writeup: BAR'd jdm h22 in 92 civic hatch - parts needed, etc to pass BAR

After over a year of trying to get my jdm h22 BAR’d in my 92 hatch, I finally passed this morning! Part of the reason it took me so long was because it sat for over 6 months (work got real busy) and because I wanted to do everything myself.

I found it hard to find everything in one post about what exactly I needed to pass the visual for the h22. Most posts just say to put the smog equipment back on (found a lot of b-series posts), but not nearly as much info for the h22. So here’s my write-up on what I installed and what else I changed to finally get BAR’d:

Mods on car:
AEM Short Ram Intake for 92-96 Preludes (mods need to have CARB # that matches engine)

Parts Needed/Installed:
First, I took the vacuum diagram from the h22 FAQ thread for OBDI engines:

I made sure to have everything in this diagram hooked up to my motor, as this is what the state ref goes by. However, because I decided to use the AEM intake, I did not need to have the Intake Control Solenoid Valve or the Intake Control Diaphragm. However, I was required to have the Air Boost Valve / Starting Air Valve. I argued multiple times with a couple state refs over this because the valve connects to the intake. The AEM intake, however, does not come with a nipple to receive the hose. The state refs (Rio Hondo and ELAC) said the EO # on the intake only excluded the Control Solenoid/Diaphragm combo. What I did was poked a hole in my intake (on the bottom, so it was hard to see the details of it), JB Welded a nipple in there, then painted over the JB Weld to make it look like that’s how it was supposed to be.

EGR Vacuum Control Valve, EVAP Purge Control Solenoid & Canister: took off any OBDI car
Bypass Control Solenoid Valve and Air Boost Valve: found on h-t from people parting out preludes

Got a deal on a new EGR Control Solenoid for a 93-96 h22, so I bought it. There’s some from others that work (I think certain accords, can’t recall at the moment)

I plugged the nipples on the intake mani for the Intake Control Solenoid and Cruise Control Actuator.

Next, wired up the EGR Control Solenoid Valve, EGR Valve, and EVAP Purge Control Solenoid.

(taken from FAQ thread)

OBD1
EGR lift valve solenoid
(The connector colors, From left to right) BLK/YEL and RED
Sensor Voltage - BLK/YEL - goes to A25
ECU trigger - RED - goes to A11.
EGR Lift Sensor (the actual EGR on the intake manifold)
(The connector colors, From left to right) WHT/BLK, GRN/WHT, and RED/WHT
ECU trigger - WHT/BLK - goes to D12
Sensor ground - GRN/WHT - goes to D22
Sensor voltage - RED/WHT - goes to D19 or D20

EVAP Purge Control Solenoid: (searched for this)
Black = ground / power from ecu
Other wire (can’t remember what color, as I’m at work): A-20 (remember, this is OBDI)
Didn’t wire up the bypass control solenoid valve cuz I couldn’t find the wiring info for it. I did have a grey plug into it, but the wires went nowhere (it was all show…lol).

Next, I got a USDM p13 5-speed ecu. The techs will inspect this for codes, but none of them really questioned me about it or asked for proof (I heard some refs ask for proof from Honda that it’s the right ecu). Found one on h-t as well.

I think that pretty much covers what I installed that wasn’t already on the car.

Here’s what I changed throughout the process to finally pass:
1. Spark Plugs – Went with NGK, oem spec spark plugs
2. Spark Plug Wires – NGK
3. New o2 sensor – Denso
4. PCV Valve - oem one
5. Oil Change
6. Oil Filter
Was also having problems with my cat, so I put on an OBD2 ITR cat that I found with 21K miles. Much better than cheap carsound ones.

After failing a couple times, did a few other things:
1. Fuel Injection Cleaning
2. Seafoam (do before oil change)
3. Cleaned EGR Valve

Then, take it for a spin, make sure there’s no codes, and get it tested. Here’s my tip though, get a pretest done to make sure you pass the sniffer. I did NOT do that, and failed a few times, at which point my registration expired and I wasn’t able to drive it (got temporary tags for a while, but those ran out…lol) until now. Also ran it hard before the test, and all the other smog tips out there (but it sat for like 30-40 minutes before it was tested ).

That’s my writeup. Hopefully, it helps people get an idea of what’s needed, etc. I’d post my BAR sticker, but don’t have my digi cam with me and I just got BARd this morning.

Let me know if you guys have any questions.

Good luck. The state ref in Alameda is pretty cool. He didn't harass me about the aem short ram like the ones in LA. And when I went back after failing the first time (within a week), he put me right on the sniffer.

%C02 %02 HC CO(%) NOX
Test RPM MEAS MEAS MAX MEAS MAX MEAS MAX MEAS
15mph 1965rpm 11.0 4.9 121 195 0.76 0.65 807 2282 GROSS POLLUTER

25mph 2243 11.6 4.4 96 96 0.65 0.11 746 214

Its funny fails the 15mph only NOX and HC but passes the 25 mph with flying colors. Cleaned out my O2 sensor a day before the BAR because I was suffering major hesitation from 2.5k to 3.5k no hesitation after a day, and then it came back. I think that's why I failed the smog part of the test. So I'm thinking it might be my O2 sensor that's holding me back from passing. I replaced the Cap, Rotor, plugs, wires, coil, and my cat has about 10k or less on it. So my plans are getting it pretested with the new o2 sensor and cross my fingers. Any help will be greatly apreciated.

Nick

definitely won't be able to pass an obdI motor in a 96.

didn't run my engine serial number....but it's a jdm motor so i wouldn't know about usdm motors. as for ect, to be honest, not sure what that is. all i had to wire up was what i wrote about. as for the prelude airbox, my guess is that it might be too long (don't know) given that my aem short ram was slightly too long (had to cut it).

Hello,
I was wondering what u did to finally pass smog. Because I have an eg with a h22 and I am failing emissions. My hc and nox are high and I need to know how to reduce them. Your info will be greatly appreciated.
