Okay, minor update with B18C1 Progress-
›I got the transmission on, but I'm missing one of the starter bolts ![]() ›After putting the transmission on and torquing the tranny bolts, my header arrived! I know it's a cheap header but honestly, it's better than using a cracked stock exhaust manifold and risking air getting into my exhaust ports. ![]() ›The measurements on the header match the stock exhaust manifold, so it's plug and play! It also has the 02 Sensor hole ![]() ![]() ›In this picture you can see where the 70 dollar price tag has its restrictions. The welds on the manifold are really clean, no holes/leaks will occur, at least right away, but inside the ports you can see that it wasn't welded/sealed, so it won't have a completely solid flow. Overall, I'll let you all know how it performs, because a lot of people want to know for sure how a cheapBay header will do. ›It wouldn't be a good story if it didn't have its setbacks. As you can see in this picture, on my transmission the VSS is totally fukked. ![]() ›My friend said he might have one lying around because he DID have a spare one, but he doesn't know if he can find it. I'm hoping to the gods in heaven he can find it, because if not I KNOW I'll have to special order it because: I dont' live in a big city and Autozone/Pepboys/Kragen/Local Honda dealership will not have it in stock I'm sure of it. ![]() ›No spark plugs! Oh well, I'm gonna take this oppurtunity to put some nice MSD sparks in there or something that'll last, and maybe 8mm gauge spark plug cables too since I'm missing the GSR ones anyway. ![]() ›My friend nearly shit himself when I told him my tranny was an S80 because he has a B18C5 and that's what his transmission is, but I'm pretty sure (Like 95% sure) the GSR tranny is also an S80 but the # slip on it is diagonal near the starter, and they share the same Tranny code just like they share the same engine code. ![]() ›I'm going to be using the D16Z6 harness on my B18C1 because I heard it's plug/play and I also need the fuel injector plugs. So far, I feel like I'm making a LOT of progress. I'm really happy with the momentum and direction of the project. I'm going to have the motor complete (Exhaust manifold, harness, injector plugs, new gaskets all around, new filters) tomorrow and will be preparing to drop it in. Thanks for the support so far guys, I'll be back soon! |

good luck man.
its good to see your doing this yourself for the very first time and not payin a buttload of money to have it swapped in by a shop.

Well guys I hate to bring a bad light to what looks good, but more problems have come around, and I"m running seriously low on funds. I have money, but it's not money I can spend, so essentially, I have no money.
The money I have is set aside for school, and I just can't prolong going back to school just to get a car running, so my project might be on pause when I hit roughly 90%, which is very ****ing frustrating, but I feel like everytime I ask for help, people leave me empty handed. First - I was "told" I could use the 93 EX harness on my GSR motor with "no problems". This was said to me by two people here and two people offline. Well... They were wrong. There are three problems with using the EX harness on the GSR motor. The first problem, is the IAB sensor on the intake manifold. There's no way to plug that since the EX harness doesn't have the socket for it. The second problem, is that my GSR head is from a 99 GSR so it has a 99 GSR intake manifold, hence it has 99 GSR fuel injectors. The third problem is that even if I found way to wire the IAB and install the socket, I'd be left with the problem of the ECU being a P28. So now I'm at a fork in the road. The ideal routes for someone with money would be: Option 1: Buy a 94-95 GSR harness (175$) and the oil pressure sensor (Mine's broken, 75$ from dealer or 20-25$ from a junk yard, if they have it) and buy a P72 ECU to be able to plug the GSR harness in($150 if I'm lucky and there's one available) Cons of this option: I can't ****in afford it, not now. Probably not for another month or so, my project is literally at its last financial support (Maybe 100$ at the most at this point, PERIOD, not something I can change) Option 2: File down the sides of the GSR injectors so they fit on the 93 EX harness (Free), replace the sensor (75$ at Dealer, 20-30 at junk yard) and run the engine without the IAB connected which will mean no secondary butterfly valve opening (No GSR 2nd VTEC sound or peak power). Cons of this option: Down the road I'll have to either buy a Skunk 2 Manifold and dead-end wire the IAB wire so the sensor doesn't throw a CEL on a chipped P28. (Might not even need to dead-end wire the IAB since the P28 doesn't check that sensor) Not to mention the cost of a Skunk 2 (Note: Edelbrock/Blox/etc is NOT an option. If it's not CARB legal I will not install it or spend extra money on it, since I have bad luck with cops) Option 3: Use the 93 EX fuel injectors on the GSR manifold (Plug/Play but they don't flow as well as GSR injectors) and wire kill the IAB like planned before, still replace the oil pressure sensor and just run it like that til I can afford each part one by one. Cons of this option: Lazy first, lots of hard work later. Replacing the injectors, chipped ECU, intake manifold, wire killing IAB. It's gonna end up costing maybe more, and I won't even have it running soon. Overall, I'm caught between two paths: Keeping the car incomplete and delaying college AGAIN, getting a part time job maybe for two paychecks so I can get my car running, or I can go back to school, get a job in a bigger city where I'm studying, and run the car with the crappy set up, no VTEC and possibly a CEL code, and gradually fix the parts as I go. The option of doing it right before I move, is NOT possible... I can't spend more than 100 right now. I'm literally against the wall on this. The other option is to just give up on my GSR motor , sell it for what I paid with extra parts, and just buy a B16A. I really don't like B16A's, especially in heavier EJ1 chassis, but it's just another option I'm considering.

you CAN use the ex harness.. all you have to do is extend the vtec solinoid wire and oil pressure switch wire... ADD.. the iab wires and knock sensor wire.... im also pretty sure u can use the ex injectors.. i believe all honda injectors are 240 cc except the lower model cx wich is 180 cc so you should be good there...
uhh you can also use the p28 ecu and get it chipped to run the gsr motor then u dont have to worry about wiring up the iab's and knock sensor also... you DONT need the vtec pressure switch sensor... there is 2 wires.. one goes to the ecu get that wire and bolt it down to a ground point on the engine... if you have any questions i can help you pm me.. theres many ways of getting around things ive done alot of swaps this is no different anyways.. good luck with it i know how it gets when u get low on funds

The motor will be in in the next day or two.
Minor update really, I"ll take pictures of the motor as it sits now and then as I drop it in gradually. Update: I finished modifying my D16Z6 harness and injectors to work with the GSR motor, I installed my water neck pipe (Thanks to CB8_ejcoupe for helping me out) and replaced the VSS on my transmission and things are starting to fall in place. Soldering is very easy to figure out how to do and was very effective in modifying the harness. I'm going to run a chipped P28 and my first upgrade will be a skunk2 intake manifold so I don't have the secondary butterfly valve. Using a P28 also eliminates the need of a knock sensor so I can just block it off. |

IF the motor would've been OBD1, I would've just left the stock GSR harness on and replaced the fuel injector plugs with the EX ones, but the problem was: Not only was the harness OBD2 but the fuel injector plugs were also damaged, so I had to make due. |

Motor's in!
Working on mounts, wiring I'm missing a few parts I'm missing the sensor that goes on the top of the intake manifold, my 02 sensor won't come out of my D16Z6 no matter what I do. |

The D16Z6 injector is exactly the same as the GSR OBD1
For the IAB plug a vacuum hose directly to the actuator and the iab open with vacuum. For now is a cheap way for working good. |
