Default Det Cans

Has anyone used this as a reliable source of detecting knock? I'm about to make myself some using a copper tube and some fuel line and hopefully I can pretty much replace having to pull plugs all the time which gets old.

If any of you have any experience with using a Det can setup like this let me know because from what I hear it is much more accurate than using an electronic device for detecting knock.

Sounds like you are making something like the soupcan and string phone?

I've never heard of anything called a "Det (detonation right?) Can"

yup its called Det can. I was searching around on the EFI101 forum and there were a number of posts where people spoke of them and said how much better they work for them than the electronic listening devices. I've almost got mine built now. I cant wait

Some tuners here in Scandinavia use this method for detecting knock; it seems to be a both widespread and accurate way of detecting knock, seeing as how a human knows what knock sounds like, where the knock sensor goes "OMG there is some kind of noise!".

Nice way to make an ass of yourself . If you dont believe it works then go on EFI101.com forums and type a search for Det Cans.

BTW guys I just got everything hooked up minus the actual earphones and the thing seems to work great. I get nice clear engine noise on the other end of 9ft of tubing.

Alright basically you need to get about a 3/8" brass pipe about a few inches long. You need to crush one end completely flat so there is a seal and no sound can get out. Then you construct some way to attach a real long hose line to it(it needs to be a very thick rubber line like fuel line or else it wont work). Then you T that line into 2 seperate lines and run them to a pair of ear protectors(the things that look like head phones). You cut a hole in each side and shove the tubes in there and glue them in if you have to. The Tubes must be air tight. Then you just drill a hole in the brass pipe and mount it somewhere on your block. I chose to mount mine on the front of the block near cylinders 3 and 4.

http://www.efi101.com/forum/vi...a118d here is a link to the efi101 tuning tips forum. The first few threads are all talking about detonation detection and det cans are mentioned a few times. I got one of the guys on there to send me an email detailing it and i also searched the web and found a couple writeups as well.

what silent detonation? If its knocking there is going to be noise. That is what this is for is picking up that "silent" detonation that you cannot usually hear without some kind of major amplification.
