as for clutches, as long as you have a 90-91 flywheel it will use a 90-91 SI clutch. unless the trans is an '88(21 spline input shaft)

It's like this...

88/89 cable transmissions will have a L3-1 gold sticker..
90/91 cable transmissions will have a L3-2 gold sticker..

you dont need a new ECU... even for auto to manual swap u dont need one. auto ecu works for manual swap u just get a cel code because the shifter always stays in park. maybe that will save u some money!

Ok call me stupid :

L3-1...... = 88/89 21 teeth clutch spline?
L3-2...... = 90/91 20 teeth clutch spline?

and what should I make of those numbers on the stamp above the filling hole?

all 88s had 21 spline input shaft - all 89-91s had 20 spline input shaft - i wouldn't make anything of the numbers on the stamp - either open it up and count the teeth (preferred method) or use the diagram above - i would point out that high altitude HF transmissions have a 3.77 final drive, which would show up as being slightly above the DX in the picture - i have seen several transmissions that were passed off as being Si because the stamp said PL3/3000, but actually had a DX final drive in them - some people will go to any length to cheat you

ZC transmissions and EX transmissions also say PL3/3000 or PL3/9000 but don't have the Si 4.25 final drive - the ZC has larger diameter splined openings where the axles go in

But if you refer to the JDM/Euro ED9 D16a9/D16z5 engines there are 3 types of production models :

-88 model <]S100000 21 teeth
-89 model S100000-200000 20 teeth
-90/91 model [>S200000 20 teeth

-88 model
-89 model non facelift but with D16z5 engine
-90/91 model facelift + D16z5 engine

Sometimes I still have problems identifying the right clutch for the D16z5 , I sold some this year and ppl had problems with the clutch I supplied even checking EPC or gearbox no. Sometimes the clutch cover woud not fit onto the flywheel.

LUK clutches state that the -89 model has a smaller disc + different pressure disc,
Honda EPC also gives different numbers for the 89 and 90/91.

The main issue here is that these are old cars and many times the tranny has been swapped for a different one. And if they used the wrong tranny often a different plate/cover has been used.. leaving the future owners with the crapp of ordering the wrong parts.

Give me the simplicity of B-series LOL

I don't see any other letter in the pic. It looks like it just says PL3/000.
And what about this?
P20/A000 is for DX/CX/VX
P20/B000 is for EX/Si

whats most consistent for you is that everything but the grooves on the input shaft points to it being an 89 tranny. the number of groove thing may just be an overlap during the manufacturing year to the newer 2 groove. but the main shafts are identical anyway, so theres really no need for confusion.

you have an 89 tranny.

trying to replace the transmission in my 91 crx dx with a 96 non vtec motor in it. Bought a 96-00 clutch to match the splines(20) on the transmission i bought at the junkyard. however, the clutch i bought is not bolting to the flywheel on the engine.
dont know what the transmission originally came out of, just that it is a 88-91 cable tranny with 20 splines. just put in new seals in anticipation of recieving the new clutch.

the original clutch from the engine i have has 21 splines and is a smaller than the one i puchased(said to be 96-00 and 20 splines) the one i purchased does however fit on transmission i have.{ L3-2418358 and inside the stamp is 12/21}

Can any one help me figure out: what tranny i have, flywheel i need, or a clutch the correct diameter with 20 splines that i can order somewhere?PLEASE HELP...

Well, this is really helpful. Just picked up apparently a 1990-1991 tranny from 1989 CRX Si for 90.00. I wanna take it apart and learn it, if I succeed I will use it as a swap for my 88 - 4 speed STD. oops, just rambling now in a really old thread. Just wanted to say thanks for the info, and make sure it ends up in my subscriptions...

This is really GOOD old school 411 since these transmissions are like 20 years old almost...

Default Another dreaded transmission question

I wish I were smarter about this before I spent the money, but it is too late and now I will suffer consequences. Here is the deal.

I want to convert my 4 speed STD to 5 speed SI transmission (rebuilt engine to meet the requirements and MPFI is in the making), so I found a 89 CRX SI at the junk yard and snatched a tranny from it. I thought I was good. Well, what escaped my attention was the fact that the engine was a D16A1, apparently swapped from 1 generation integra.

My question is, how can I tell whether my tranny is from an SI (D16A6) or a teg (D16A1) car.
Numbers are: L3 2292471. Stamp says PL3 9000. Minshaft has 2 grooves and it is 22mm in diameter.

I tried putting it in 1st gear by pulling gear selector pin all the way out, but then I cannot get the shaft to spin, should it be this way? Or should it rotate freely?

Thanks.

You might actually have bought a dohc zc 5 spd (mine iz marked pl3 9000 that came with my rex I got for doing a swap for a guy) Had to uze 88-89 teg intermediate shaft, custom intermediate shaft mount to bolt it to D16A6 block, and 90-93 axlez.PITA since came with no axlez, but love the close ration gearset! You'll know if you have one if ur axlez are too small for the holez in it (dohc zc FD iz larger)

my car is a 90 dx sedan and the donor is a 90 SI hatch. does this mean i should still get the donor's axles since the outer splines are different? if the outer splines different (is this the splines that connect to the hub?) then i should also get the donor hubs? thanks
