Do Honda Engines really spin "backwards"?
I hear people saying this all the time, but I thought that from 1970-something on, all engines were built to spin clockwise (when looking at the front of the engine, ie: the crank pulley).

The V6 engines spin the conventional way as well, as they are located on the right side of the car. That's the reason most of the engines spin "backwards", they are on the left side, and the transmission is on the right.

you don't need proof if you think about it. it takes an extra set of gears to turn the energy the other way -- which adds more rotating mass and friction, losing more hp from the crank to the wheels.
a good example of this is the dsms vs the evos -- they flipped the motor around backwards but kept it rotating the same direction for that very reason.

Think about it for a minute and you'll understand. If you turned a B18 around the other way, you would have 5 reverse gears. To solve that, you spin the engine the opposite direction. The transmission remains the same, it's just a "mirror image" of a conventionally spinning transmission.

If the engine spins the 'Honda' way, but they insisted on installing it in the right side of the engine bay; THEN they'd have to add another gearset to reverse the direction.
