Default Baran Institute LS-Vtec Project

This last week i brought my b18b longblock into school too begin my ls-vtec project. While we wasted two days just too get it on a stand it didnt take long before we got ripping things apart! We got the complete longblock dissasembled and organized and measured within two days.I regret not taking pictures of the dissasembly but i did manage too bring my camera today and get some pics of what we worked on today.I will add pictures every weekday throughout the build...

PICS ARE UPDATED DAILY ...

Heres the bare block ready to be honed...

About 1/4 worth of the parts out of the long block...

This is Me Honing the block...

My friend Terry going too town...

Terry and Dearth cleaning like mo fo's

Pre-Wash...

Water in action..

Nice and soaped up...

First stage of paint...looks like crap on this camera.

And the bunch of retards working on it..aka me and my class!Lol

Let me know what ya think the fun just got started!

Yeah.. Im going to have to disagree with the soap and water thoery. The added minerials to basic public water alone will create surface rust everywhere (ie inside the sleeves, in the water jacket etc. Hot tanking is the ticket Weird picture but VERY cool if your getting to do all this for free at school. to that.

BTW, DITCH that Chilton Shop Manual and get a Helms.

im pretty sure you cant even hot tank aluminum blocks or at least that is what all the machine shops around here tell me so they put the blocks into a jet washer...also how are the aluminum water jackets gonna rust?and lastly if they use air to blow all the water away it wont even have time to rust anyway..im sure on the bores they would prolly shoot a lil bit of wd40 on to prevent rust but i may be wrong so correct me if i am

Aluminum blocks can be and are hot tanked daily. Hot tanking procedures are done at a lower temp then when you actual temp of a running engine. Therefore, the heat NOT a problem. Maybe your suggesting that the distilled solutions or the solvents a hot tank may use are harmful to the block? Wrong again, these fluids are processed to take out any minerials and sodiums that can harm the metal. The said minerials and sodium are typically found it hmmm lets say (public water). Ever seen bottom ends with RUST in the sleeves? I have many times. Do a search.

Never the less, I dont think he will cause any serious damage. Thats not at all what I was trying to say. What I am saying is that his theory of soap and water better than a good old hot tank is ridiculous. The water will leave behind unwanted residue and which is just not desirable. Good luck with the build. Free school build equals in my book. I dont care if you clean it in ketchup.

I hate you for the tools you have at your disposal! ....

Then again I like you for all the information you contributed because of it.

BTW, 300 dyno pulls in 1 year / 10,000 miles. When you sell you car and they ask how many miles it has and either freeway of street tell them 9,700 on the dyno and the rest on the way there

Well this is how we cleaned the block...once everything was removed we put it in the schools cuda...which is similar too a hot-tank,but cleans it with cleaning solutions. We then polished all the mating surfaces. My teacher told us one of the best ways too cylinders after its done is soap and water.Anyways after it was all washed away he took a hi pressure air gun and just blew the shit out of it...But i will post more pics on monday when i get a chance.

Keep us posted on how it works out. I"m just wondering why you painted the block black because its going to be difficult to see if your leaking oil, just a thought.
