Very interested in the EF kit. i plan to replace everything while in there. any newer input or advice on these kits now that its been over 2 years in use? </TD></TR></TABLE>I thought the install was pretty straightforward, even for myself who had never even opened up a steering rack. The only part I found vexing was installing the rack housing with the pinion installed back onto the cross-member, same with removing it earlier. In my situation it required some creative angling.

Yep, pretty straightforward install; easier if you're good at puzzles. When you remove the dust seal from the pinion gear, try your best to not damage the dust seal as I was not able to find one from the dealership - the counter guy said there was only 1unit in the whole country.

My lock-to-lock confirms some of the info already posted in this thread for a crx:

stock Si 4.2
Quaife 2.4
standard, if I recall correctly 3.7ish?

I have before and after driving video, but I'm trying to figure out how to combine the videos into one so you can easily see a side-by-side comparison.

I was told that the quaife QR rack only works on DX or HX racks? not si's. any word on this? Is there any other companys with anything comparable?

just wanted to report my findings, since there's a lot of wrong info in this thread.i just put the Quaife parts into an 89HF rack.

the stock HF rack:3.8 turns L2L
with the new Quaife parts:2.362 turns L2L.obviously i didn't measure that exactly,but i measured almost 2.4 turns,so the 2.362 i've seen listed is correct.

comparing the old and new rack.

the old pinion had 5 teeth, the Quaife has 8.

the difference is very noticeable, and i love it!this customer's car has a B-series swap,so it's slightly heavier in the nose,205 width tires and a 300mm steering wheel.turning the wheel while sitting still is a good bit harder, but tolerable.once you get moving though,it's completely worth it!i'll be putting this conversion in my track car very soon

a finished pic:

So I've pressed the pinion bearing onto the pinion shaft. Do I need to install the snap ring washer thingy into the machined groove on the new shaft, similar to that seen in the stock pinion? Or are you guys just using the retaining ring that goes in the groove that is in the box to hold the pinion bearing?

I've circled the "thingy" (I don't know its exact name) in red in the pic:

Thanks.
</TD></TR></TABLE>

From the reply to that post I'm assuming that there is absolutly no need for that little lock washer. I agree that the C-clip should hold that bearing in fine. As for the dust seal that goes over the bearing, did you guys re-use the old stock one or were you able to order one from honda?

it's almost impossible to remove the seal without damaging it.you can get it from Honda.

Does anyone know which is the best type of syn. bearing grease to use for these manual racks? I'm specifically looking for one that'll provide the least amount of friction, since it'll be a bit tougher now on from turn to turn.

Will the Honda super hi-temp urea grease fit the bill?

I wonder why no one has looked into the best type of grease for these kits. I'm even surprised that Quaife doesn't include one or even recommend one! You'd think they'd do some research into figuring out what will provide the best lubrication for their rack+pinion set - given that it will be noticeably harder to turn the steering wheel.

Waiting for a reply back from Quaife.

Yea....I ended up going to honda and getting the correct grease for the steering rack, removal/install is a snap. I have yet to adjust the steering.

Fastbrakes.com sells them, and if anyone deserves a little more credit and profit from Quaife, its Brian.

That's very true. Brian is the one that actually convinced Quaife to make these, and the one that helped them with fitting and testing the design.

As I stated before, one of the modifications I'm making includes the installation of the Quaife rack and pinion gears to speed-up the steering. As it turns out, Quaife machined the pinion gears for use in HF and DX rack's....so it doesn't fit the Si rack. In the picture above, you can see the stock pinion in the center, with the (as-is) Quaife unit on the left. The rack rides exactly in the middle of the pinion, and you can see that the Quaife would only have partial gear engagement . To optimize the Quaife, placing the rack's gears in the middle of the pinion, I first shortened the shaft's end by exactly .085" (A). Next I machined a steel spacer, tapering the end that 's next to the pinion gear to insure that there'd be no interference with the rack's gears (B). The final machining operation (C) was positioning the new snap-ring groove that positions the spacer, retaining the bearing. I'm pleased to say that the steering action is very smooth. If you're getting the idea that there's no such thing as "bolt-on" parts, you're right. At this level, you've got to be prepared to each and every piece that goes into the combination....if you want it all to work trouble-free.

That's actually a direct cut and paste from this page:

http://www.theoldone.com/artic...c.htm

Just before the 1/2 way point (the page is really really long).
