[FAQ] How-To: Install Energy Suspension Polyurethane Shifter Bushings. Part 1 of 2.
I've read many threads on people asking how to install ES Poly Bushings but no How-To threads. So, I've taken it upon myself to show you the steps on installing some new Poly b00shings.
Energy Suspension Poly b00shings:
Sorry for the darkness and bluriness. The part # is 16.1102R for all 1988-2000 Honda Civic models, excluding the 1999-2000 Honda Civic Si (I believe).
Step 1:
Drive your vehicle on some ramps. It makes it a whole lot easier to crawl under your vehicle.
Step 2:
Behind your transmission, you'll find this bracket with one part of the linkage going to it.
This linkage is held by a 12mm bolt. It's self-threading on the other side, so no nut.
Step 3:
Unbolt the 12mm bolt and move it out. Might take a little shove here and there to get it out, especially if it's the stock b00shing and bolt.
Step 4:
Once you remove the bolt, the linkage should drop right out of the way. If you are directly under it, watch out so that it doesn't hit you square between the eyes.
Step 5:
There will be a sleeve inside the stock bushings. Use some regular needle-nose pliers as I did, or anything that is big enough to shove in the sleeve and pry it out. The needle-nose worked like a charm, went right through.
Step 6:
With your needle-nose or a screwdriver, push out the old b00shing. I used a 12" screwdriver for the leverage. I didn't want to slip using the needle-nose and bruise a few knuckles.
Step 7:
Lube up the new Poly b00shings with the supplied grease that comes in the package. Don't over do it. This grease is a bit sticky once it gets applied.
Step 8:
Place one of the b00shings on one side of the mount. Should slide in fairly easy due to the lube.
Step 9:
Slide in the other b00hing. A new sleeve is provided in the package. Lube this up aswell.
DON'T FORGET TO INSTALL THE NEW SLEEVE!
Step 10:
Squeeze the linkage back up onto the bracket and bolt it back in place. Might take a shove here and there to lign it back up.
Once you're done, take it for a spirited drive. You WILL notice a difference.
Definitely crisper shifting. No more sloppiness. Also, this is only with the transmission side installed. There is another b00shing that is installed where your shifter drops through the floor. Since I couldn't wedge myself under there, part 2 of 2 will come by next week. I will also provide a step-by-step on the install.
Install time +/- 10 minutes.

looks like you didn't have to cut down the sides of the bushings for it to slip into place. i had to do that and it was a bitch. nice write up.

I found that the process becomes much easier if you take the linkage completely off the car before you start trying to take bushings out or put them back in. That way you can use a vice to cram everything in there nice and tight without having to worry about something slipping out 1/16th of an inch while you're trying to wedge it back into the transmission bracket and ******* up your whole damn day .

there is not a better time to install a short shifter as well. I did both at the same time and loved the difference.

Thanks for the advice. I'm thinking on getting the Evasive shifter for $35 but I need some review on it. I'm loving the TWM shifter but $160 for a shifter with a **** is kinda steep. But it does drop the shifter 3".

I got mine from SummitRacing.com for $20 shipped. You can probably find them at other sites for a few dollars cheaper, but they look like those shady websites that might not send their products on time and what not. SummitRacing is very popular and sent my item the next day. I received it 4 days later with Ground delivery.

If im doing this on a 94+ teg linkage, will i have to get a press to push it in?
i did it with the stock one but it was a PITA and this might be harder

If I was back living in Astoria, I would help you out (damn I miss NYC). Besides that, I hear if you place the bushings in the freezer for an hour or 2 they'll shrink. Might be enough shrinkage to not use a press. These actually went in A LOT easier than the stock ones.
The stock ones is a 1 piece bushing with "lips" at the end. The ES ones, are a 2-piece design. So, the smaller end of the bushing goes in. No need to get them pressed in.
Then again, I've never worked on Integra linkage. Try the Integra forum for more details.
Part 2 of 2 is there aswell if you need any more help. PM me if anything...
