I am in the process of changing the timing belt in my 91 accord LX. When I turn the motor manually the timing belt slips from the middle of the cam gear to the very end of it where it will eventually fall off. The balance shaft belt is also loose. I have taken apart the tensioner and put it back together twice now and still not enough tension. I also replaced the two springs thinking it would change and it has not. I was wondering if there is a special procedure I have to do in order to make the timing belt and balance shaft belt tight? Thanks

You should have gotten a Haynes manual at the minimum. It will walk you thru the complete process of the timing and balance belt replacement. The balance shaft has to be locked when you set the engine to top dead center.

I already knew that and I have a Haynes manual. Everything is set at top dead center and the balance shaft is locked in place. The book does not explain though how the there is not enough tension on the belt and that was my question. I just want to know how to put more tension on the timing belt.

did you by any chance install a little 10mm bolt on the t-belt tensioner pulley ??

if so ,remove it .. readjust the belt, loosen the 14 mm nut, turn the crankshaft counterclock toward frt of car, tighten the 14 mm adjuster nut

If you did not install the bolt, double chk your work , something might be misaligned .. also make sure that tensioner hole is properly in the little nipple on the block.

Where does the 10mm bolt go or where do I remove it? The tensioner is aligned with the nipple on the block. The only place I found that a bolt goes through would be where the tensioner pivots near the spring. Are you talking about that? The way it is now is that the pivot is all the way to the end of the bolt and no more tension can be put on it. Is there any pictures that could help? Thanks a bunch Honda master I been messing with this for 2 weeks now looking online for help and looking at various guides. I even went to Honda dealership for answers and they didn't help me one bit which I understood. I really need to buy a factory manual would that help out?

If you scroll down a bit, there is a picture with red lines and letters,,

the one with the letter B is the bolt that does not need to be there, techs install it just to keep the tensioner from popping out, but once it is ready to reassemble and adjust the tension on the t-belt, that bolt needs to be removed,,

Thanks that helped a bunched. The belt still feels loose though, I was wondering how much tension should be on the belt? When I push on it with one finger it moves about an inch to an inch and a half. Is that normal?

Did you have any luck figureing out the issue. I seem to be having the same issue. I do not have the 10mm bolt in and have tried numerous times to turn the crank ccw and tighten the tensioner but no luck.
