Remote start FTW. Its better for the engine and transmission to have the fluids at optimal operating temp. Plus here in New England it can get damn cold in the winter.

negative ghost rider, car reach operating temp much faster if yoiu get in start it and after 30sec to 1 min drive away.......I live here in MN where it routinely reaches -25 during the winter and I yet to have a problem with my car. Owners manual typically state start car and drive away gently.

It was 29 degrees when i left for work this morning, my car was NOT at factory designated temps..lulz... When its -20 here, you can let your car run all day and night and it wont EVER reach suggested operating temps bro. So the 5 million people in this state alone do it for months at a time, years on end, and look how many have failed because of that. But i guess thats cool, let her run... weird... |

Letting the engine run for up to 10 minutes to warm up is about the most you want to do. Also, letting the engine idle to get warm does not mean that the rest of your drive train is ready for you to beef on it just because your coolant gauge is in the middle.
Personally, I remote start my truck as I am putting on my boots in the morning. My truck has to heat up 10 quarts of oil so I like to give it a head start. When I get in it and leave, I drive easy and keep the boost as low as possible. It runs all day without being shut off until I get in at night usually around 6:30 or 7. Even with this kind of operation, my engine oil life lasted 13,000 miles on the last change. It usually lasts around 9,000-12,000 depending on how I drive.

Holy shit balls. Same exact thing happened with my gf about a month ago except I was at work and had to come home. Tried to slim jim it for about 15 mins but found out via google its not possible with her car. Locksmith came, wedged an airbag between the top of the door and the frame, and got the door to flex enough to open the lock with a rod in 5 mins. $135 bones down the drain.
I was told by a AAA rep that when airbags are need to unlock the car they call a 3rd party locksmith and only cover up to a certain amount which I think was $60. Definitely making a spare and keeping it on my set of keys. |

and to the other guy, never in my life had engine problems related to oil delivery issues.... fact is car WILL warm up FASTER when you have the engine under a load......I get in car start it up and even on the COLDEST of days I start getting heat by the time I am getting on the fwy on ram about 1 mile from my house and work. Honda even goes as far as to make the engine miss a little to aide in the warm up process (04-08TL for example) and to have their automatic transmissions hold lower gears longer and delay torque converter engagement. letting you car run at idle to warm up = excess fuel delivery = fuel washed down the sides of the cylander walls = dilluted oil = more frequent oil changes........

My car is garaged when I'm home, if it's been a cold night, I still try and wait about 30 seconds before I drive away gently just to make sure that oil has circulated

I have never had a spare set of car keys and never will. It's not that hard to THINK about what you are doing before you do it. (I know you know this...but some people do not)
In general, people who misplace things crack me up. It's really not that hard to remember where you put something. |
