Default Timing belt question

I'll be doing more racing on a road course next year and trying to figure out if i should upgrade my timing belt or not. this happened after my last race

(fortunately it was right when i got home) and i'm not sure i should get something like a Toda timing belt or similar or just get an OEM Honda t-belt?

Whatever you do, get it done right. Plenty of people have raced for years with stock timing belts.

A stock belt or comparable replacement is fine. Unitta, Gates, Contitech, Goodyear . . . as long as it isn't ancient, it will work. Change it every 8 years or 105,000 miles, along with the water pump, cam seals, and accessory belts.

That belt had to be ooooold to break like that - I'm talking 10+ years/120,000+ miles. When you remove it and inspect the faces of the teeth, you're sure to find many more cracks. Looks like your cam (hopefully) only skipped about 4 teeth, so it probably didn't bend any valves.

The Toda belt doesn't serve any real purpose unless you're running high-rate valve springs.

Gates makes some of the OE timing belts for the J-series, but all of the B-series belts I've seen have been Unitta Sun.

If it's a JDM engine, there is no way of knowing how many miles are on it. Every JDM importer will throw the "40,000-50,000 miles" figure around, but they're all full of shit no matter how honest they may seem. Unless you bought an entire front clip that included the odometer, or you replaced the belt while installing the engine (which should always be done with a salvage engine FWIW), you just won't know the true history of it.

And considering that B-series production ended after model year 2001, all original B-series timing belts are now at least 8 years old and thus due to be changed anyway.

Update: Interestingly enough, I was opening a Gates replacement timing belt box today and noticed a logo on the back with the lettering "GATES UNITTA ASIA." Looks like Gates and Unitta Sun merged at some point in 2002 and are now one in the same.

Stock belt should be fine. Did you do anything to the belt prior to the race? You have to rotate the crank a few times, then tighten the tensioner. When I replace belts, I also like to suggest replacing the tensioner as well. The tensioner always makes an odd squeak afterwards and makes an annoying noise.
