Default Loosing my brains with B16A2 (S2 Pro 1+)

Hello all,

I have 1997 EDM/JDM del sol equipped with B16A2 (P30-G11 OBD1 ECU, but OBD2a wiring).

I had burnt exhaust valve on cylinder 4 some time ago and I made complete head repair. New valves (S2 Pro), Springs (S2 Pro), Ti-Retainers (S2) and S2 Pro1+ cams. it was build up using Cometic gasket head set. I also honed the cylinders and changed the piston rings + rod bearings.

BUT,

After build up engine has started to act weird. First of all it started to have rough idle. I thought that it has some problems with the plugs and changed them. Helped a bit. On first dyno run car was missing power and had weird power / torque curve. Only some 145whp and a huge dip on torque curve on 5000-6000.

Well I went for a first race and it was clear that car was missing power and almost instantly it started to misfire, once it even stopped accelerating at 5000 1/r even the gas pedal was fully depressed. When it cooled down it may have idled fine for a while, but it got worse all the time. Engine warning light was never on!

Well i have changed / inspected following:

- Dissy (changed)
- Injectors (all give same amount of fuel)
- Pressure ok
- Plugs changed several times
- Compressions on all cylinders 12 - 13 bar.
- Grounding should be OK, one additional wire added to valve cover.

Like stated no engine light.

Current syptomhs:

idle ok, but when giving full throttle engine is not responding instatly. It sounds like misfiring until proper level of rpms has been reached. I have not been able to try the car either on track or at dyno.

When searching all Honda forums, somebody might have had similar sympthoms but no solutions are ever given. For example this thread seems familiar on sympthomwise.:

PLEASE HELP if you have some good ideas!

Timing is checked.

I have also double checked the valve lash. 0,007" on intake side and 0,008" on exhaust. These values are recommended by S2.

I assume that faulty O2- and / or MAP - sensor should give Engine light signal.(?)

Who set the cam timing....did the installer degree them to make sure everything was at TDC?

What do your A/Fs look like at 5-6000rpm on the high cam?

What header/exhaust combo are you using?

EDIT: What are you using for tuning

I made the cam timing using VTEC rocker arms and dial gauge. Max lift to intake: 98 deg and to Exhaust 105, like proposed on S2 Pro 1+ installation sheet. Prior setting the cam I verified the TDC using dial gauge.

A/F is approx 13 - 12 on 5000-6000rpm

Header is original on exhaust I have 2" tube up to first muffler which is 2,5" and at the end I have 3" muffler.

Head, pistons and valves are basically stock. No High comp S2 valves were used.

Measured compression 12-13 bar on each cylinder. Measured using 30$ compression gauge so accuracy is in minimum +/- 1 bar.

so you did a fresh rebuild and you only got 180psi? It should be around 220psi, especially if its a fresh rebuild.

Like said I have my doubt to the gauge. It can not be sealed to the spark plug threads completely. It has only rubber ring/boot which is pressed against the plug hole.

Compression was similar before rebuild on all other three cylinders. Naturally the one where valve was broken the compression was 0. Before head repair car ran great / fast with OEM cams and these compression rates. I would liked it to run eaven faster with S2 cams.

I used ether trying to find vacuum leaks also, without major result.

More or less I am pretty much lost with this problem.

if you replaced the pistons/rings and just honed the cylinders that may be part of the problem......... what angle valve job was done to the heads? how many faces?

Pistons are used (old). Only rings were replaced (NPR). Cylinders honed prior installation.

All valves were changed to skunk 2 Pro and valve seats were machined.
