5th gear whine goes away when clutch engaged
two nights ago I drove to North Carolina and back from charlottesville VA (8hrs) and about an hour away from my house on the way back i noticed 5th gear started to make a whineing noise. when I put the clutch to the floor it goes away. it doesnt seem to do it in any other gears. last night a friend said to put 80 weight oil in the tranny and i pulled tranny drail plug nothing came out and i put 2 quarts of the 80 weight in. still have problem.
1st ?-- why is car whining 2nd ? -- is 80w oil going to be aliright? i thought it called for 5w 30

Wait… so you pulled the plug on the tranny and had enough room to put two quarts of 80w oil? ….thats not good….
And I wouldn’t recommend putting anything other than Honda OEM manual transmission fluid in your car. I have also heard of using GM Synchromesh but I would just stick with OEM. Just my .02

i had this happen before and it was the beginning of the throw out bearing going bad. having fluids that low also isnt a good thing.

yeah i hear that. I just bought a timken throw out bearing last week when I was putting my clutch in and completly forgot about it. I guess I will have to take her apart again for another 3 hours.lol my leak is coming out from my driver side axle so its probably a seal. driving to N.C and back probably slung it all out and thats why i was low.

Its not the throwout bearing. If it were it would be making a noise when the clutch pedal was depressed. Remember the throwout/release bearing doesn't turn until you begin to depress the clutch and it contacts the fingers on the pressure plate. I'd say one of the mainshaft bearings (sometimes refered to as the input shaft) is bad. Running a transmission with no oil in it isn't exactly the best thing in the world for it. You should be running Honda MTF btw, at least 10w30, 80 is heavy.

On older civics the manual tells you to run 10w30 oil I would use the newer honda mtf , it has anti wear addatives to help protect things better then motor oil and is what honda now recommends. Get rid of the 80 w gear oil you are running it is way to thick to lubricate prop.
