Default Honda Techs chime in on 07 civic steering click issue

Please Honda techs or customers with said vehicle with exact issue only...

I am a Honda Tech and I have been working on a new 07 Civic Ex sedan for several days. It only has 300 miles on it, and the cust brought it in with a "clicking" noise when turing in/out of parking spots and at slow speeds.

I can duplicate it by turing the wheel slightly to the right and then left while stationary or at slow speeds. It will not do it turning the wheel left to right (wont do it in the air it must be on the ground). With the chassis ear I can hear it more clear and it sounds like when you push in the lid of a snapple bottle.... I get a click....click. I can make this sound at any point in the position of the steering wheel simply by just turning right slightly then left again. It will not do it while driving and turning sharp with a little speed.

I have made sure EVERYTHING is tight and or lubed. It is NOT the bump stop issue in the TSB. This noise is coming from the center area of the rack. I dont want to dismiss the rack but I also dont want to condemn it right away. I have contacted Tech Line and they have had one other issue and did not get a resolve from the tech.

Please let me know if anyone has seen the same issue.

i have the popping noise pulling in and out of parking spots. i assumed it was the bump stop issue. but my car doesn't fall within the vin range. honda wont do anything because i have comptech springs.

ill pull my car in the shop after work and see if i can locate it.

You will of course get some pad shift one time when changing directions, but I would be curious to see if you have the right to left "click".

Actually, I had something similar happen in my 06 civic. The sound came from the steering column and wasn't really a clicking sound but a rubbing sound against something like a ribbed vacuum hose. It was really subtle.

I took it in and they had to replace something in the steering column. I can't remember what part it was, but I can look for my paperwork if you want.

I have an '07 Si that makes an odd noise that seems to be coming from the steering column. It is happens more when going up or down hills. It sounds like a geiger counter detecting radiation - weird I know but that's only way I know to describe it.

UPDATE...

We decided to put a new rack in the car, and it seemed to fix it just fine. Weird for a car with 400mi onit!

Honda fixed mine the other day. I don't recall the specifics but I will look at my invoice when I get home and list exactly what they did.

So for my situation, I had the cable reel assembly replaced and the noise disappeared.

Well I haven't figured out what the problem is, but I have noticed that when it's making the noise I can apply a little upward or downward pressure on the steering wheel and the noise goes away until I release the pressure. Any ideas?

umm, i recently noticed the same problem. It's weird because if only happens like you said (turning the wheel right and then left). I own a 06 Civic SI and it seems that once I drive for a bit, the sound goes away. Any input on this?

We've seen a number of bad upper strut bearings clicking on 06+07 civics. They'll only do it with the car on the ground. Been replacing the whole strut assembly.
