If you purchased the B18C LSD, then you will need to use the shims as the B18C uses 19.5mm thick bearings, compared to the 18mm bearings of the B16A.

I recently bought your lsd and differential bearings. I was wondering what the little shims that are included with the bearings are for? I've ordered from the the dealer before and have never received shims with the bearing.

Unfortunately, it isn't possible to use the Helical 1st with the new shaft as both 1st/2nd are straight cut. Your friend would need to order the full 1/2.

Yeah, Jay (J's Racing) is one of our authorized west coast installers. He'll basically tell you the exact same thing that I mentioned (as he was the one that diagnosed/fixed the problem that Jake Blackman was having with his bearings) i.e Everything needs shimmed/clearanced correctly, and the bellhousing must not be warped.
