It wasn't just the 20th Anniversary car that represented Honda's S2000 at this year's Tokyo Auto Salon.

Notable Rides

For fans of the JDM world, car shows just don't get much better than the Tokyo Auto Salon. This year's extravaganza was especially notable for S2000 fans, who were treated to a very cool 20th-anniversary version of the car created by Honda. But there were also quite a few other notable builds on-site, and Super Street documented them all on film across a trio of separate articles.

Large Gathering

The 2020 version of the Tokyo Auto Salon featured over 800 modified vehicles and attracted a whopping 300,000 people to the Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba. The extravaganza just celebrated its 37th year of existence, a run that doesn't figure to end any time soon, regardless of the dire state of car shows, in general, these days.

Booming Market

But that can be attributed to the strength of our hobby in general. Interest in Japanese vehicles is as high as it's ever been, and the aftermarket is similarly booming. This year, over 400 exhibitors lined the halls of the convention center, offering up the latest and greatest in performance and appearance modifications.

Growing Trend

This year, widebody kits seemed to be the hot thing, as companies like Pandem applied their wares to vehicles of all makes and models. That includes everything from economy sedans to hypercars, and pretty much everything in between.

Apples to Apples

Ultimately, the Tokyo Auto Salon is something like Japan's version of SEMA. But many people think that it's actually better than Las Vegas' massive display of excess. To us, the quality and taste of the builds are better overall. Instead of rolling out the same, similar stuff over and over again, most builds at TAS are very much unique.

New Models

Major automakers had a presence at TAS as well, with many of them using the event to introduce new models. That included Honda, who rolled out the revised 2020 Civic Type R to the masses. Honda also brought along an updated S660, the excellent little mid-engine machine that we sadly can't buy here in the U.S.

Impressive Mix

This impressive mix of new models, wild custom builds, and the latest in parts & accessories is what keeps people coming back to the Tokyo Auto Salon, year after year. And it's only gotten bigger and bigger in recent years. Hopefully, that will remain the case for as long as we're on the giant rock, at the very least.
