M&M FK8 Wide Body Type R

Though the new Civic is already on the streets, the FK8 still has a lot of fight left in it. This M&M wide body kit smoothes out some of the CTR's sharp styling, and also reduces the contrast, too. We think it looks the part.

More Body Color Means The FK8 Is Transformed

Admittedly, Honda went a little wild with the styling of the FK8 Civic Type R. Scoops, vents, bulges, ducts. It was all a bit crazy and compounded by contrast black trim just about everywhere. This wide-body kit by M&M features minimal contrasting trim.

Sure there's a black front splitter, but the grille has an actual shape (and to us looks a lot like those from Acura). It brings the car's styling more in line with the purity of the previous generations, although there are still a million little ducts here and there.

Width? Yup, it's got that.

Perspective is everything, and from above, we get an idea of just how much wider this body kit is than the standard car. Box flares on the front seem to kick out at least 2 inches on either side, and the rear flares start nearly at the center line of the car.

Of course, being a kit, it all works in conjunction. The front fender flares match the front bumper, This then leads to the widened side skirts, which flare out with the new panels on the rear doors.

Aero Is Evident Everywhere

With a view from above, we can see that M&M paid special attention to aero, as well as looks. Replacing the factory wing is a contoured wing similar to the original, but without all the fussy mounting end plates.

While the factory wing helps with aero, this one is there for a clear purpose; adding grip. Coupled with the front splitter, and side skirts, this is a package that can look the part, and do it, too.

There's Some Meat On Those Tires

Obviously, that wing needs to serve a purpose, and that's to plant the rear end of the car down in the turns. "But it's a FWD car, it doesn't need a rear wing!"  Aero has far more to do with the drive wheels and much more to do with how cleanly the air goes over (and even under) the car.

Because of the low front splitter, there isn't much air under the car. This means the rear of the M&M kit is quite close to stock. However, assisting that aero grip is mechanical grip from considerably wide rear tires.

It's The Little Details

Scoops and vents and louvers were part of the FK8's polarizing style upon its release. Somehow this M&M body kit sprinkles them throughout the car's styling with a lot more subtlety.

Three extra openings appear above the main grille with the Honda emblem in it. And extra scoops appear on the sides and below the openings below the headlights. There are even little venturi effects on the edges of the splitter. Yet we see it all as rather clean. TE37's help make it a complete package.

What Do You Think?

Wide body kits can be wild, but this kit seems to take the FK8 and improve upon an already good platform. Subtle, effective, and most appearing to be a factory kit are all praise-worthy things we can say about this car.

But will we someday look back at the slightly wild styling of the FK8 in fondness? A time when the Honda designers were given totally free reign? Or is it still a bit of an oddball because of the changes that lie under the hood?
