Honda Files Patent for Possible EV S2000 Successor

It might not be a high-revving gas-powered roadster, but the Sports EV might just be the fun Honda machine we've been pining for.

EV Future

Honda teased us with a couple of cool EV concepts, the Urban EV and Sports EV, a couple of years ago. The Urban EV went on to receive a green light for production (as the Honda E), but now it looks like the Sports EV might just make its way to some showrooms in the near future as well.

Looks Familiar

We know this because Dutch website Autoweek.nl recently leaked some Japanese patent office images that sure look like they could represent a production version of the Sports EV. Familiar styling features including the concept's long hood, round headlights, and pronounced front wheel arches.

Fastback Looks

There are, of course, a few differences between the concept and these renderings. They include a revised greenhouse and less-steeply raked windshield. The overall look is more fastback and less coupe if nothing else.

Mid-Battery?

This new shape actually looks a lot like a mid-engine design, though obviously there's no engine here. But perhaps Honda plans on placing the battery pack in the center for improved handling.

Slightly Revised

The rear of the car looks much the same, yet still different. The taillights are now oval-shaped instead of rectangular, and there are even what appear to be functional cooling vents ahead of the rear wheels.

Spiritual Successor?

Of course, there's no telling whether these patent drawings show a production Sports EV or something entirely different. It could, in fact, represent the "baby NSX" long rumored to be the spiritual successor to the S2000.

Too Good to Be True?

The kicker, of course, is that it just looks too much like the Sports EV concept not to make us guess that it is, in fact, another production EV vehicle. But we can at least dream of a mid-engine S2000 replacement, no?

Fun and Practical

If so, at least give Honda credit for building fun, economical, and small EVs instead of boring, egg-shaped things like what currently dominate the market.

Denied

Of course, the Honda E is currently scheduled to go on sale overseas, not here in the U.S. So it seems doubtful that we'd be able to buy the sportier version here, either.

Worth the Wait?

We might have to wait a few more years to receive a fun and sporty Honda EV here in the U.S., and maybe even longer for anything that resembles the S2000's spiritual successor. But at least, hopefully, it'll be worth the wait.
