Price Bump

With a brand new Civic on the way for 2022, we're also looking forward to a new version of the lauded Type R. But those who want to score the last of the current-gen Type R will need to dish out a little more cash to do so, as it will receive a $440 price bump, according to CarsDirect.

Breaking It Down

The price increase breaks down as a $400 increase in the base price of the Type R, plus an extra $40 for destination charges. That means the 2021 Civic Type R has a new base price of $37,895, plus the mandatory destination fee of $995, which brings the total up to $38,890.

Across the Board

As CarsDirect noted, the Type R isn't alone in this price increase - every model in Honda's lineup also received a bit of a bump, ranging anywhere from $200 to $300. Destination prices also increased across the board by $40 for cars and $55 for crossovers, minivans, and trucks.

Common But Aggressive

These sorts of price adjustments are pretty common from Honda, but this increase is also somewhat aggressive compared to what we've seen in the past. And considering the fact that the 2021 Type R is completely unchanged from the 2020 model, it won't be netting buyers any extra equipment, either.

Going on a Diet

The other big news for 2021 is the addition of the Type R Limited Edition model, of course, which starts out at $44,990 including destination. This special model features lightweight forged aluminum BBS wheels, special yellow paint, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, retuned dampers, revised steering, and less sound-deadening material, which results in a 28.2-pound weight loss over the standard Type R.

Record Setter

Just 600 of these special cars will be produced, and each one comes with an individual serialized number plate to tout that fact. A Euro-spec version of the Type R Limited Edition, which has even more weight-saving measures than the North American version, set a new lap record for front-wheel-drive cars at Japan's Suzuka circuit last year.

Safe Bet?

Meanwhile, the 2022 Honda Civic will bring a host of revisions to the long-running model that include a more rigid platform and heavily revised, more refined styling. Honda hasn't yet said if the Type R will be coming back, but given the current model's success, it's a safe bet at this point.
