CAR FRONT

This TLX is known as the Flagship in their Acura line. Its standard 2.0 four-cylinder turbo engine is a modern design, but with only 272 horsepower, hardly competitive with European models. Now the factory is offering an upgrade for those seeking more power.

EMBLEM

This brings us to the S-Type. It has a long list of goodies that will make Acura fans drool.

ENGINE

Under the hood is an all-new 3.0 liter V-6. Its twin-turbo system creates a healthy 355 horsepower and 354 lbs./ft. of torque at a low 1,400 rpm. Fuel economy is listed at 10/24 mpg.

TRANSMISSION

The gearbox is an excellent 10-speed automatic. It is a push-button type which, is superior to the old-fashioned stick. This system takes up less room and can be operated without taking your eyes off the road due to its touch feel design. Above is the Dynamic knob to select drive modes: Comfort, Normal, Sport, Sport+, and Individual.

PADDLES

Those who want to choose gears manually can use these paddles. They are located on the steering wheel, where they can always be reached, regardless of turn position. This is far better than some brands that place them on the steering column where they can be reached only when driving in a straight line.

WHEELS/BRAKES

For the best four-wheel road grip, the S-Type comes standard with Torque Vectoring all-wheel drive. The springs are 40% stiffer, and roll bars are front and rear. These four-piston calipers with 14.3-inch rotors provide the best brakes we have ever used. The pedal feel is perfect.

EXHAUST

With these dual exhaust tips sticking out, we know there is something special under the hood!

TOUCH PAD

The infotainment system is controlled by this finger touch pad. It takes some getting used to, especially when the vehicle is moving. But overall, it is easier to operate after a week of practice.

MPG

Most of our driving showed an average of 21 mpg. But on one highway trip, we did observe 26.4. The only drawback is expensive premium blend is suggested.

REAR

This is certainly the best sedan Acura has offered. It is quick, corners like a race car, comfortable, and stops on a dime. Overall build quality is excellent.

PRICE

The base four-banger TLX starts at about $38K. The S-Type comes loaded up with all luxury items standard at $53,100. The only option is metallic paint at $500. The total fee is $54,625. Considering all the goodies offered, and performance delivered, this is a bargain of sorts.
