SUV

The Honda CR-V is one of the better selling SUV's around. The quality, reliability, and economical operation are top-notch. So if the standard one is great, the hybrid version surely must be better. To find out, we had one dropped off in our driveway.

Engine

The standard CR-V has a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine rated at 190 horsepower. Fuel economy is listed at 27/32 mpg with 29 overall. This hybrid version has a gas engine combined with the usual battery and electric motor setup. Total power output is a bit more at 212, with gas mileage claims of 40/35/38 mpg. Both systems are connected to a CVT automatic transmission.

Transmission

The upgraded CR-V's come with a push-button transmission control, which is the best thing since sliced bread. It is superior to the traditional shift stick, as it doesn't take up space, is almost impossible to select the wrong gear, can be operated without taking your eyes off the road, and automatically goes into Park when the engine is turned off. The lower tier CR-V's issue a stick shifter, but at least it is mounted high as to not take up space. A SPORT button increases performance if you find yourself in a hurry.

Hybrid

A hybrid emblem is posted outside so everyone will know you are trying to save the planet and spent the extra money.

Wheels

The addition to the front wheels, the hybrid has an electric motor driving the rear wheels for better traction. Standard issue wheels are 19-inch alloy with 235/55R19 all-season rubber.

Off Road

With high ground clearance and all-wheel drive, the CR-V hybrid can be taken off the pavement. However, remember this is a car platform, not a truck, so tread lightly. Also, keep in mind there is no spare tire, so best not to travel too far from the pavement. A small tire repair kit is issued, but only for fixing small damage, nothing serious.

HVAC

The climate controls and infotainment systems are easy to use, but only after mastering a learning curve. Starting with these newer models, we are now getting a real manual volume knob for the radio. It is far superior to the horrible finger touch style issued before that required unsafe glances down.

Driving

The CR-V hybrid is a very comfortable vehicle to drive, whether in the city or long highway trips. Real-world fuel economy was 41.7 in gentle city driving, and 29/31 on long highway trips 9. The hybrid system adds about $3K to the CR-V and starts about $29K. The Limited is loaded with just about everything, with NO OPTIONS. This makes the price tag a good deal at $35,950.

Overall, the Honda CR-V is an excellent choice. If you’re seeking better fuel economy, the hybrid version is even more so.
