The Lactose Amphibian

What exactly is a Cheesefrog? No one really knows. However, what we do know is that in this video just after he yells out of his window the Viper in question has one hell of a hard time running down this mysteriously stock looking vehicle. So what is the story behind this car? Who is the person behind the build? We might not be able to answer all of these questions, but we do know what’s under the hood. Let's start there.

How is it this Fast?

A lot of the speed is down to the weight, but in this particular video, the car was making somewhere in the vicinity of over 430 horsepower to the wheels. Obviously, the base you chose for a build like this is important which makes a turbocharged B18B with fully built internals a good start. The car also has custom camshafts that open valves in order to let the 850cc injectors spray a barrage of fuel into the combustion chamber. This car pulls incredibly hard to keep up with a 10-second Viper. Cheesefrog’s car looked bone stock.

World Wide Legend

When this video came out it was the stuff of legends on the internet. At the time the Lamborghini Gallardo was a force to be reckoned with and this little B-series ended up smoking one of those too, just for good measure. The whole thing seemed insane to those of us who watched it which would fundamentally change the way many of us viewed the 4-cylinder hatchback. No one had seen a street driven Honda perform anything like this at the time. It may as well have been a Top Fuel Dragster that beat the Viper because we all viewed it that way.

Bad Mother—Shut Your Mouth

Haters gonna hate which is exactly what some people attempted to do when this car came out—especially in the muscle car community. Some would say they weren’t impressed as the Viper was stock, but that was missing the whole point. Cheesefrogs Civic really displayed what could be done with core knowledge of engine building in a small displacement vehicle way before people were tuning with E85 or showing up to Texas 2K events with crazy engine swaps and nitrous. This car was way ahead of the tuning curve.

Pop Goes the Weasel

The B18 ended up giving up before being resurrected to produce over 500 horsepower to the wheels. With over 100 more horses than before who knows what this car would be capable of. We’re unlikely to find out as the car was built in a time before the internet documented every moment of existence. Where this Civic and it’s owner are now is anyone’s guess. Maybe the Cheesefrog will strike again. We can only hope.
