This article applies to the Honda Civic (1992-2000).

The headliner, covering the cabin ceiling of your Honda Civic, is held in place by only a few different components. These include the sun visors, rear-view mirror, cornering handles, and the dome light. it's an easy task to do yourself, but covering the headliner with your choice of fabric might be a little more difficult and tedious. If you remove the headliner before having it replaced at a shop, you might just save a little on those hourly labor costs.

Materials Needed

  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Ratchet with 8 mm socket

Pro Tip

Disconnect the negative (black) battery cable before you begin. Also, remember to save all the screws and covers because they will be used to re-install the new headliner.

Step 1 – Remove the sun visors

Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws that secure the sun visor. Remove both the driver's and passenger's side visors.

Step 5 – Remove the headliner

Once all of the accessories and components attached to the cabin ceiling have been removed, the only things holding the headliner in place are the side panels, rear windshield panel, and the edges of the sunroof.

Carefully pry one side with your hands. Pry it just enough to slide the headliner out towards the center of the car. Repeat this process with the other side panel and rear windshield. The headliner should be hanging from the edges of the sunroof. Gently pull it down, and the headliner should fall right off.
