When it comes to giving a car style and good looks, installing a rear spoiler is one of the simplest modifications you can make. There are many different kinds of rear spoilers to choose from, but many Civic owners appreciate the wing spoilers from the Civic Si. It turns out this spoiler is easily transferable to other similar Civic models. This guide will show you how to install an Si spoiler or any other aftermarket spoiler on your Honda Civic.

Materials Needed

  • Rear spoiler
  • Heavy duty trunk spring
  • Trunk spring tool
  • Drill with drill bit set
  • Center punch
  • Philips head screwdriver
  • Four 6x12mm washer-bolts and o-rings
  • Cable ties
  • Touch-up paint

Step 1 – Prepare for the installation

Before you start, make sure the spoiler you chose will fit on the trunk of the car. Open the trunk and look at the lid. You should see two marks on either side of the lid. These are the four points you need to drill. If your spoiler comes with brake lights, you'll need a fifth hole for the brake light harness. Mark the points where you need to drill. If your spoiler came with a template, use this to help mark the points.

Step 2 – Drill the holes

Use a center punch on each drill point because this will help keep the drill steady. Drill a small hole with a 3mm bit. Increase the size of the hole using a 6mm bit, and then again with an 8mm bit. Do this for each of the four main points. The hole for the electrical connector will need to be 10mm. When you are finished drilling, clean off the metal shavings, and then put a dab of touch-up paint in each of the holes. Let it dry.

Step 3 – Install the spoiler

Set the spoiler over the holes you just drilled, and pull the wiring harness through the 10mm hole. Attach the four 6x12mm bolts, and tighten them until the spoiler is secure.

Step 4 – Connect the brake lights

If your spoiler comes with brake lights, disconnect the negative (black) terminal on your car battery. Pull the spoiler's electrical harness all through the hole, and then route it through the rear tray panel past the cargo light tray until it reaches the brake light. Disconnect the brake light, and connect the spoiler lights to the 2-pin terminal. Tie down the spoiler light harness with cable ties.

Step 5 – Replace the trunk springs

For heavy spoilers, you'll need heavy duty trunk springs to keep the trunk lid open. Remove the center clip from the trunk spring, then use a trunk spring tool to remove the springs. Be careful as you do this because the springs could snap and hurt you. Attach the new springs in the reverse by using the tool to pull and twist them into the first notch on the hinge arm.
